Tenugui: hand-dyed cotton cloth from Japan
A tenugui belongs to taiko just as much as bachi and tabi. Many players tie the cotton cloth around their heads as a hachimaki. During training, you can use it as a sweatband; when traveling, wrap your bachi in it; and at home, it also makes a great wall decoration.
The cloths are hand-dyed in Japan and made of 100% cotton. The thin fabric is absorbent, dries quickly, and becomes softer with every wash. The unfinished edges are typical for tenugui. Initially, a few threads may come loose, but this stops after a few washes.
You can choose from five traditional motifs: plovers in the mist, playing goldfish, crane and tortoise, dragon, and weeping cherry blossoms. In Japan, each of these represents something positive, such as unity, happiness, strength, or a long life.
